The Best of What's Around

This week's Topic: Best Street in San Francisco

Greg: Folsom St
Folsom originates at the Embarcadero and Mills Plaza, extends through the heart of SoMa and the Mission and ends at the Southern tip of Bernal Ht's. The street is a microcosim of the entire city - million dollar residences with breath taking water and Bridge views in South Beach, vibrant night life, cafe's, and world class dining in SOMA, a tree lined urban residential neighborhood in the Mission and a charming, stroller lined avenue in Bernal Ht's.

Favorite spots on the street

Garrett
: Divisadero/Castro

I'm going to look at the two of these streets as one, they practically are geographically, but demographically and economically, they are quite different.

This long stretch of road runs from the Marina Green all the way down to Billy Goat Hill Park in Glen Park. The journey south along Divisadero is an adventure for the eyes. Up through the Marina you pass all sorts of cafes, clothing stores, restaurants, bars, and people walking the streets on their cell phones or in their fancy cars. At the top of the hill, one will find gorgeous mansions, some built 100+ years ago. Cruise over and down, you'll continue to see lots of businesses, restaurants, etc., but it's of a different style than the northern part of the town. Shortly, you'll be driving along the border of Anza Vista, NoPa, Haight Ashbury and Hayes Valley. Before you know it and just after you cross Duboce, you'll be on Castro Street which will take you through the heart of the Castro district, Eureka Valley, Noe Valley and finally land you in Glen Park.

It's a fun ride, a major thoroughfare and a great sight seeing street--that's why it wins my "best of" for the week.
